Running Gear + Inspo

Run

Like any sport, the gear and training plan can make or break an experience. I'm just an average runner with an average budget, so these are the basics. If you are looking for elite and pro-level running gear and training styles, check out the inspiration section below.

ON THE BODY

goodr running sunglasses: I was adamant that it was impossible to run with sunglasses until my aunt loaned me a pair to try on a trail run together. Sunglasses protect the eyes from UV light and also from bugs. I forget I have them on most of the time they are so comfortable.

Sweaty Bands headband: Keeps the flyaways in check and literally never moves.

UltrAspire hydration vest: I have an older model that was about $40. Hydration vests can cost more than $200, but I have found this one to work great. I use the bladder for water and the pockets for my phone, fuel, key, etc.

Saucony running shoes: I appreciate the cushion and snug fit of Saucony. Many of my running friends prefer Brooks, which I find a little roomier and allowed the foot to feel closer to the ground.

Apple Watch: The native Workout App just keeps getting better. It captures plenty of detail for an average runner and has helped me learn more than I ever thought I needed to know about my running stats and trends over time.

AirPods: I have used the originals and the Pros and neither has ever fallen out of my ears.

Calia long sleeve polo: It's technically a golf shirt, but it's my favorite running shirt because it's lightweight and breathable. It’s great for hot weather when I need sun protection and cooler weather when I need a bit of warmth. I also love the mock neck when I'm wearing the hydration vest so I don't have to worry about the vest rubbing my skin.

Thinkx absorbent underwear: If you worry about peeing your pants during a long run when bathrooms are hard to come by, Speax by Thinx will take that worry away so you can focus on the run. (Side note for the ladies: if you haven’t tried these for your period, it’s time.)

IN THE BODY

nuun Sport Hydration: Post-run hydration to get those electrolytes into the body. The tablets are great for traveling.

Spring Energy: Running fuel that uses real food designed to reduce gastrointestinal distress - and tastes great. I recommend starting out with a sampler pack to try them all. My favorite is Awesome Sauce (also vegan-friendly).

UCAN Energy Powder: This was recommended by my former running coach and it works! I mix a scoop with 12 ounces of water and my pace is always better when I drink it. It tends to make me bloat, so I only take it before long runs.

TRAINING PLANS

Having a plan is important. I haven’t found a perfect plan for myself yet, but researching many marathon training plans gave me enough knowledge to create a plan that is working great for me. I also worked with a running coach, which I highly recommend to anyone looking to step up their running game.

Dr. Phil Maffetone’s MAF (Maximum Aerobic Function) Method: This is the foundation of how I run today. I transitioned from pace running to heart rate zone running and have been injury free and feeling great. It’s true that slowing down can help a runner improve speed. (Here’s another helpful article about heart rate zone training from Runner’s World.)

This post is a fantastic overview of the top five marathon training methods. My pro tip is to try a variety and do what works for you and your body.
